Case Study: Hydraulic Emergency Stretchers for Trauma Center

Inquire

QZ Medical recently completed and shipped a multi-container fleet delivery of our Multi-Function Hydraulic Patient Transfer Stretcher Trolleys to an expanding regional trauma center and emergency hospital network in South America.

Operating a high-acuity trauma center requires equipment that withstands nonstop daily use. The emergency department needed mobile stretchers capable of moving trauma patients rapidly from ambulance bays directly into resuscitation suites, CT scanning rooms, and operating theaters without transfer delays or equipment failures.

Here is a look at how our hydraulic transfer stretchers solved clinical bottlenecks for our hospital partner, protected nursing staff from back injuries, and performed upon arrival.

1. The Clinical Problem: Transfer Delays, Height Mismatches & Fishtailing Wheels

Before partnering with QZ Medical, the trauma center faced three operational hurdles during daily patient intake:

  1. Dangerous Height Mismatches During Bed Transfers: Fixed-height transport trolleys forced nurses to physically lift heavy, unconscious trauma patients over height lips between stretchers and surgical tables, causing nurse lumbar strain and risking secondary trauma injuries.

  2. Difficult Steering in Packed Hospital Hallways: Older stretchers with four independent swivel casters tended to fishtail down long corridors, requiring two nurses just to keep the stretcher rolling straight around busy corners.

  3. Interrupted Oxygen Therapy: Standard stretchers lacked built-in oxygen mounting, forcing staff to lay heavy oxygen tanks directly on the mattress next to patients during transit.

To eliminate these risks, the hospital procurement committee sourced our certified hydraulic patient transfer stretcher fleet.

2. The Engineering Solution: Smooth Hydraulic Lift & 5th-Wheel Steering

Our engineering team supplied a specialized fleet of hydraulic patient transfer trolleys configured for rapid emergency response.

  • Hydraulic Pedal Height Elevation (550–900 mm): Driven by heavy-duty dual hydraulic lifting columns. Nurses can pump the foot pedal to raise or lower the bed platform smoothly from 550 mm to 900 mm. This allows staff to match the stretcher deck flush with ambulance stretchers, CT couches, or ICU beds, enabling smooth lateral sliding transfers.

  • Central Braking System with 5th-Wheel Directional Guide: Features a central pedal bar with color-coded pedals:

    • Stepping on the red pedal locks all four wheels simultaneously, anchoring the stretcher firmly during emergency intubation or defibrillation;

    • Stepping on the green pedal releases the brakes and drops a centralized fifth-wheel steering guide to the floor, allowing a single nurse to steer the stretcher straight down long hallways without sideways drifting.

  • Single-Hand Gas-Spring Backrest (0–75°): Medical staff can press the pneumatic handle at the head end to elevate the patient's torso smoothly from 0 to 75 degrees with one hand, keeping the other hand free for airway management.

3. Complete Emergency Resuscitation Configuration

To ensure patients receive uninterrupted care during transit between departments, every unit was fully equipped:

  • Front 5L Oxygen Cylinder Bracket: The lower front chassis features a welded steel bracket that holds a standard 5L medical oxygen cylinder securely, ensuring constant oxygen delivery during elevator and ward transit.

  • Flame-Retardant Die-Compression ABS Deck (1930 × 640 mm): The mattress platform is molded from native ABS plastic that resists blood, bodily fluids, and hospital disinfectants without warping.

  • Washable Oxford Mattress with 2 Safety Restraint Straps: Features a water-resistant Oxford fabric mattress cover and 2 quick-release safety restraint straps to hold trauma patients securely during rapid movement. Includes hydraulic soft-drop side rails that lower smoothly at the push of a button to prevent finger-pinching.

4. Packaging, Container Dispatch & On-Site Installation

Long-distance ocean transport requires protective packaging to ensure medical equipment arrives in clinical-ready condition.

  • Knockdown Flat-Pack Master Cartons: Beds were packaged with high-density EPE foam corner protectors inside heavy-duty corrugated export cartons, maximizing container space and lowering ocean freight costs.

  • Palletized Forklift Loading: Stacks were loaded directly into ocean shipping containers under our ISO 13485 quality management protocols.

5. Real Two-Way Client Feedback via WhatsApp

Shortly after the shipment cleared customs and was deployed across the hospital's trauma department, the Hospital Logistics Director sent an update:

Conclusion: Reliable Emergency Furniture for Hospital Fleets

This successful trauma center deployment demonstrates that when hospital transport equipment combines smooth 550–900 mm hydraulic elevation, centralized 5th-wheel steering, gas-spring airway positioning, and built-in oxygen cylinder containment, it delivers real clinical efficiency and long-term commercial value for healthcare institutions worldwide.
